About the Position:
The Cherry Hill Public Library is seeking to hire a creative and dynamic supervisor for our Youth Services Department. We are a state-of-the-art library in a thriving and diverse suburban community. The successful candidate will be a responsible and imaginative individual ready to keep up with our busy public library. Excellent customer service skills with a focus on providing patrons with a positive experience are necessary.
Duties will include (but are not limited to):
- Interviewing, hiring, training, supervising and evaluating all Youth Services staff including Librarians, Library Assistants and Student Pages.
- Maintaining department records, statistics and reports, and monitoring department expenditures for library materials.
- Responsible for monthly, weekly and daily Youth Services Desk schedules and entering weekly department schedule into the library’s attendance software.
- Providing public desk coverage, including assisting library users in answering Youth Services questions, and helping patrons locate and use department materials and equipment.
- Organizing and conducting school and community outreach as well as in-house school and community visits.
- Selecting children’s fiction and non-fiction and managing portions of the collection as part of the Youth Services collection development team.
- Creating library programming and services which target the 0 to 18-year-old demographic (including research, scheduling, publicity, and implementation).
- Prepares clear, accurate and informative narrative and statistical reports.
- Helping plan and implement the Youth Services Summer Reading Program including the management and use of program software.
- Leading Youth Services department meetings and collaborating with colleagues to support department processes and goals.
- Contributing to and updating library social media accounts.
- Managing department volunteers.
- Reviewing literature, surveying personnel, and conferring with Library Director to determine departmental needs.
- Staying active in state and/or national professional organizations and attending training, seminars and conferences.
- Representing the library at community events as required, often outside regular working hours.
- Lifting and shelving books, pushing heavy book trucks, bending, kneeling, sitting on the floor and standing for long periods of time will be required.
Knowledge and Abilities:
- Knowledge of current practices in children’s services, literature and materials.
- Familiarity with youth development and learning stages as well as serving youth of all abilities.
- Ability to understand and apply library filing and classification systems.
- Physical stamina is required to put away materials, push and pull loaded book carts and other library equipment and materials. Physical activity includes, but is not limited to, prolonged periods of sitting as well as periods of standing, mobility, stretching, bending and stooping.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Knowledge of Koha ILS a plus. Ability to learn SAM Activity Manager, Smart Money Manager, Libby, ReadSquared and other library apps and systems.
- Ability to work harmoniously with colleagues, librarians, supervisors and with adult and juvenile patrons of the library.
- Ability to understand the importance of following established procedures and regulations.
- Ability to work and perform tasks without supervision.
Qualifications:
- Must have a Master’s degree in Library or Information Science from an American Library Association accredited college or university.
- Previous related experience sufficient to demonstrate thorough competency and extensive knowledge of the principles and practices of library management, preferably at least 5 years in public libraries.
- Ability to plan, schedule, supervise and evaluate the work of assigned staff for proficient performance and high morale.
- Strong communication and customer service skills.
- Ability to work both independently and within a team.
- Experience working with teens and/or young adults.
- Successfully pass a criminal background check.
- Mandatory Direct Deposit.
- New Jersey residency required pursuant to NJSA 54:14-7 (L. 2011, Chapter 70), if selected for the position.
Schedule:
This is a full time (35 hours a week) position with one weeknight and rotating Saturdays and Sundays required.
About the Library:
The Cherry Hill Public Library is the largest municipal library in the southern New Jersey area. The Library is open seven days a week and is operation Monday through Wednesday from 10:00 am to 9:00 pm, Thursday, Friday and Saturday 10:00 am to 5:00 pm, and 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm during 32 Sundays a year.
