Summary: The Parsippany Library is seeking a Part Time Children’s Librarian or Library Associate to join the dedicated team of professionals in the Children’s Department at our Main Library. Responsibilities include providing customer service, reference and online reader’s advisory, development and implementation of creative and innovative children’s programming, and attending community and local school outreach.

Supervisor: Head of Children’s Services
Compensation: $25/hour for Librarians; $20/hour for Library Associates, and includes paid sick, vacation, and holidays, and enrollment in the Defined Contribution Retirement Program (DCRP) if eligible.
Schedule: Mondays: 1-5pm, Tuesdays: 1-5pm, Thursdays: 1-9pm, Fridays: 1-5pm, alternating Saturdays: 9-5pm.

Children’s Librarian/Library Associate Job Description
Job Duties:
- Develops and/or conducts organized, entertaining, informative, creative, and age appropriate programs and crafts.
- Prepares children’s book displays that highlight the collection/special holidays and celebrations.
- Makes recommendations for new materials.
- Examines incoming children’s material to maintain familiarity with the Collection.
- Provide excellent customer service to patrons in person and virtually.
- Provide reference and online reader’s advisory service.
- Familiarization with children’s authors and reading trends.
- Provide customers with instruction in the proper use of library resources.
- Shelving books and shelf-reading materials to ensure they are in the correct spot.
- Assist with weeding the collection according to procedure.
- Participates in visits to schools, pre-schools and other organizations.
- Assist with individual study room bookings, including recording any new bookings and unlocking the rooms for patrons at their designated time.
- Participate in staff committees and attend scheduled staff meetings.
- When needed, conduct Storytime or other programs at the Mt. Tabor Branch (in a rotation with other staff).
- Other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Maintains effective working relationships with coworkers, patrons, school employees, and others in the community.
- Contributes ideas and solutions to problems.
- Ability to sit, stand, bend, kneel, reach, grab, climb, push and pull. Ability to stand throughout an entire program.
- Ability to lift and carry up to 25lbs. and push/pull carts and bins up to 100 lbs.
- Ability to create, develop, and implement engaging programs for children.
- Proficient in the use of computers, knowledge of Koha and MAIN a plus.

Ability to work according to a schedule, and communicate with Supervisor regarding changes following library policies.
Job Qualifications and Requirements
- Librarian: MLS/MLIS degree and a Professional Librarian Certificate.
- Library Associate: Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor’s degree.
- Experience working with Children in a public library setting.
- Compliance with the New Jersey residency requirement: “New Jersey First Act”, N.J.S.A. 52:14-7 (L. 2011, Chapter 70).
$20-25/hour
